Affiliate Marketing Terms
Affiliate Marketing Terms By Mark R Hamilton
SEO... PPC... Natural Listings... Content Promotion... the world of internet and affiliate-marketing is full of affiliate-marketing terms that all sound very very foreign. But, they all mean something, and this article will explain the most common.
SEO
Search Engine Optimization is one of the most common affiliate-marketing terms. It involves using techniques such as backlinking (see below) and common keywords to score a high place in the search engines. Someone using SEO in their campaigns effectively can score position one by using a variety of techniques found over the internet.
PPC
Pay per click is another common affiliate marketing terms. It is paying 'per click' for adverts, these are the sponsored links that you see next to the free searches on engines like Google and Yahoo. Each advertiser pays the search engine every time someone clicks on their link, and this price is decided by the amount of competition there is.
Natural Listings
This is the position in the search engine your website or content gets. Google produces hundreds of thousands of results, and a natural listing is the position your website, blog or content gets in the search engine. You try to get your listing in the top ten, as this is the first page of Google results.
Backlinking
Backlinking is a way of increasing traffic that not everyone in the internet marketing world agrees with. Some swear by it, others (like me) are not so sure. Backlinking involves publishing content across the website with your links on it. Google works by seeing how many links are going to each website. It measures the 'importance' of each link, and the calculates using a very complex formula which websites are relevant for each keyword searched for. Backlinking can provide many many links pointing toward a website, boosting it's natural listing in the search engines.
Keywords
These are words, or phrase that people search for, and I would probably consider it to be one of the most important affiliate marketing terms around. A keyword is what someone searches for. So, you might have a PPC campaign with ads that pop up whenever someone enters a particular keyword. You might have a website optimized for SEO with a number of keywords in it that cause it to get higher natural listings.
Hoplink
A hoplink is one of those affiliate marketing terms that is closely related to affiliate products. For example, ClickBank produces hoplinks. This is a special type of link which when clicked on, can track who sent the visitor. If you have a page with a hoplink on it, it redirects to the merchant's website and let's the website know who sent the traffic. If a sale is made, they can track that, then pay you.
These are some of the most common affiliate marketing terms. There are many, many others out there, but this lot are the ones which crop up the most. If you come across affiliate marketing terms that you don't understand, make sure you Google it, to see if you can find out.
