Adwords PPC - Deep Verses Wide

PPC Classroom 3.0 - PPC Deep Verses Wide
By Jeff McClain

Adwords Pay Per Click or (PPC for short) is one of the most affordable forms of advertising available. PPC is a flourishing business that by 2010 is expected to reach $ 11 billion. That being said, PPC is also one of the most misused and wasteful forms of advertising when it comes to expense vs. revenue. In this article we will cover one of the biggest mistakes most newbie affiliate marketers make, and that is going Deep instead of Wide when it comes to keyword research.

When you have setup an Adwords PPC Campaign correctly, you can allow your PPC Campaigns to continually drive qualified traffic to your websites. One of the most important aspects to a continuing PPC campaign is keyword research.

I would like to share with you one of my own experiences with keyword research that helped me take things to the next level.

When I started out as an Internet marketer I already knew a little something about marketing, so you guessed it, my first campaign was on marketing, more specifically affiliate marketing. When I did my keyword research for my campaign I went to my keyword search tool and typed in affiliate marketing and it gave me a huge list. It included all of the keyword combinations that included one, the other, or both of my two keywords I entered (affiliate marketing). This is what is known as a deep list. My list looked something like this:

Well you get the picture. I then took my big list and loaded it up and waited for the traffic to start pouring in. Needless to say nothing happened! Sound familiar? Disappointed I went back to analyze my data and realized that by going with a deep list I was cutting out a huge percentage of my potential customers! It hadn't occurred to me that somebody that wanted to be an affiliate marketer was interested in more than just affiliate marketing. There was PPC, SEO, HTML, Clickbank, home business, and a plethora of other topics. It was then I went with a wide search that included additional search terms. Now my list looked something like this:

Earn money Home business PPC affiliate PPC advertising Affiliate marketing Earn money at home

As you can see by widening my keyword search criteria I greatly increased my potential customer list. It was shortly after I made this change that I started to see my first profits. Now keep in mind there are some additional things to consider when choosing keywords like how much competition there is and the relevance of your keywords to your campaign. I will be covering these topics in later articles. In the meantime PPC Classroom 3.0 Power Pack is a wonderful resource. I hope this helps you start making profits like it did me.

All the best,
Jeff
