Looking for a Great eBook Market?

Finding your Market Niche

Regarding eBook markets, an old marketing instructor once asked his class “What is the single most important skill an Olympic diver must possess in order to win the gold medal?” Everyone had suggestions but the instructor shrugged them off. Finally he said “The diver must have the ability to tell if there is enough water in the pool before he dives”.

So, with this in mind, find out whether there is an eBook market for your eBook before you begin writing. So many times I see beginners write an eBook, and then look for people to sell it to. No! Find customers first. Then write an eBook to help them solve a problem. In addition, the market you sell into (your niche) must produce enough revenues to make the effort worthwhile. So, while brainstorming we must keep the size of the keyword niche in mind. Picking your keywords or eBook topic is most important. This decision more than many others will define whether or not you are successful at making money with your eBook.

Glen Livingston is an expert at finding eBook markets and selling informational products into those markets. He has entered 12 online markets and achieved profitability quickly in each one.

Gratefully, he offers many hours of free audio training at the “state-of-the-art keyword research techniques” section on his web site. I have taken the liberty of paraphrasing his major points below:

“Traditional marketing wisdom says you make your money when you choose your market. Any fisherman will tell you that the best rod and bait in the world will not do you any good in a mud puddle. So, let’s talk about how to find the best fishing hole. While there are literally dozens of factors to consider when choosing a market, here are four of the absolute most important things to know before you go fishing…

How big is the market (Market Size?)
How competitive is the market?
How stable is the market?
How profitable is this market?

For the most part, Glen is asking us one key question “Are other people making money in this market”? If they are we can make money in this market as well.

How big is the market?

We can get a pretty good feel for the size of our eBook market by using Google’s Keyword tool.

You can go to Google's Keyword Tool by clicking above. To use this tool, you will need to prove you’re a real person not a machine by typing in a few squiggly letters into a security box. Eventually, you will arrive at an input screen that asks you for a key word. Enter the keyword phrase “work from home”. You should now be at a page that looks similar to the inset above. The left hand column lists your keyword and others that Google finds for you. The “advertiser competition” column is an indication of the number of advertisers bidding on the keywords.

The “Local Search Volume” column is for the last available month and shows the approximate number of search queries matching each keyword result. This statistic applies to searches on Google and the search network in the most recent month that Google has data for. It's specific to your targeted country and language as well as your selection from the Match Type drop-down menu.

The “Global Monthly Search Volume” shows the approximate average monthly number of search queries matching each keyword result. This statistic applies to searches performed on Google and the search network over a recent 12-month period. It includes traffic in all countries and languages and is specific to your selection from the Match Type drop-down menu. For our purposes, the “Global Monthly Search Volume” gives us an idea of the size of the market we are considering.

The insert above shows that people searched for the phrase “work from home” 3,350,000 times while searching for the phrase “work at home moms” 74,000 times. This information is helpful in assessing the size of your market in terms of Keywords.

We will talk later about the right size for an eBook market or niche, remember, not too big but not too small. But for now, this Keyword tool gives us a good feel for the market size given a topic or keyword. Later we will use this tool to brainstorm for the perfect keyword niche.
