ebook market stability and ebook profits analysis
How stable is the market?
Market stability leads to eBook profits.
So far we have publishing tools to calculate the size of the market as well as the competitiveness of the market. However, is the market for our product getting larger and improving? Or is it decreasing and getting smaller? Clearly, if our keyword is based on a fad or a short-lived trend, the resulting revenues will not continue for very long.
For our benefit, Google shares a publishing tool that will allow us to view trends in our niche market which will allow us to decide if the market is stable, growing or declining. Click Here to go to Google Trends
Type in "yoga" and you will see a chart similar to the one below.
As you can see, I used this publishing tool to search for trends for the keyword “Yoga”. The graph clearly shows that the market is stable, but has seasonal fluctuations a good indication that eBook profits are available in this market niche. The fluctuations occur at the end of year. Presumably, more people are searching for information on Yoga around the holidays then at other times of the year. This analysis gives us a great long term picture of this niche market, but you can change the duration shorting the time span to one year or one month.
Also, the tool gives the user the ability to look at various regions. I used the all region setting. If you were to use the United States setting you would get results for just those searches that occurred in the States. Then under the regions tab, searches that occurred in cities would be available sorted from the highest to the lowest. Occasionally, the tool lists articles that may have affected the searches on the left of the graph area.
I also used this tool to search for trends in the iPhone market. See below.
The trend is positive for this product and reacted when articles about the iPhone were published.
If you’re going to spend time and money marketing and publishing eBooks, you should be spending time looking at these graphs. This is a great publishing tool and offers the users a lot of insight into the nature of your eBook market niche. We use this tool later in the chapter when ranking and rating market niches. Use this tool to improve eBook profits.
How profitable is the market?
Above is the format we will use when we want to estimate a keyword niche’s profitability. For our purposes, we are calculating the profitability of a keyword niche in the model airplane hobbyist area namely “Model Engine” or Model Engines.
We are just using this market niche as an example. But, if we were considering this market niche as a candidate for an eBook book on various types, specs, uses and little known secretes of model engines, we would use this calculation to calculate the eBook profits potential. Pay special attention to the secondary keywords as these add to eBook profits immediately.
First, the model assumes that we have checked the niche’s competition. We need to know that we can win first page position on Google’s search engine fairly quickly or everything is for naught. Later, we show you how to judge a niche’s competition with over 15 examples.
So, from Google's Keyword Publishing Tool, we learned that approximately 201,000 visitors search on this term every 30 days. (See “Total number of searches per month” in the insert) However, we also learned that a vibrant secondary market exists with many secondary keywords with visitors in the 15,000 to 25,000 visitor range. The secondary keyword market is the market niche we will establish our site on since these keywords lead to eBook profits quickly. As we continue content and link building, we will eventually win the primary market’s keyword niche. With this publishing system, eBook profits are earned quickly. Also, please keep in mind that these eBook profits continue to be earned for years. Look at the stability charts again, every year these keywords generate new visitors who are anxious to buy information in your market niche.
Even though we have attained first page placement, in our experience, only 20% of those searchers will clink on our URL. None-the-less, with a market size of 201,000, approximately, 40,200 prospects will be sent to our site every 30 days.
All professional eBook publishing statistics tell us that on a well optimized landing page, 3% of prospects will buy our product. However, those statistics were taken from professional landing pages that may have been optimized over many many years. Depending on the quality of your landing page, you may be able to get to 3% quickly, but most will struggle to get to 1% within 90 days. But if you optimize regularly you should attain 1% within five to six months from start-up. Then again, you can always have your landing page optimized by professionals immediately. Google the search term, “landing page conversion specialist” for a list.
So, if 40,200 prospects are sent to your site and you sell or convert 1% to customers, then you will have sold 402 eBooks or other informational products. If you charge $17.00 for your product you will have sales that month of $6,834 or around $82,008 per year. This example should be your first of many epiphanies you experience reading this book. You should now see the absolute importance of picking the right niche. Judging the size of the niche as well as the competition becomes the most critical aspect of success.
There is still more to learn here. Note, that in the following profitability analysis, only two important parameters change; namely the market size and the selling price. When comparing two niches, you must consider these puzzle pieces. For example, what if we also had a niche we thought we could win first page placement with but the size was only 90,000 searchers. But, because the product’s niche was more technical, competitors were getting $30.00 for their information, which product is more profitable. You also need to consider that because the product is more technical in nature, the secondary keywords are probably easier to win so it will not take very long to begin making money with a technical eBook. Take a look at the inset.
Not obvious was it. So, use this profitability template before you decide on a niche and also use it to compare niches.
